On the Leckford Estate, we grow about 120 hectares of rapeseed crop each year, producing around 500 tonnes of rapeseed. The seed is harvested in July, dried to 8% moisture content, then conditioned and stored for up to 12 months before it is pressed.
Step 1: The rapeseed is sown and grown on the Leckford Estate.
Step 2: The seeds are harvested and stored for up to 15 months.
Step 3: The seed is then cold-pressed. The two screw presses in our oilseed processing unit can work 24/7, generating up to 20 or more litres of oil per hour.
Step 4: The oil is bottled, capped and labelled by our dedicated oilseed processing unit Partner
Step 5: The end result is a beautifully coloured oil, presented in two formats, a 500 ml bottle and a 250 ml bottle. They are dispatched to Waitrose branches and our Farm Shop
Step 6: What remains after this operation is a pelleted residue which we feed to our dairy cows for extra protein, ensuring that we are wasting as little as possible!
Rapeseed oil has a health advantage over olive oil in that it has just 6% saturated fat content, which is less than half the 14% of most olive oil. It also has higher levels of important fatty acids - Omega 3, 6 and 9 - than any other vegetable oil. The Omega 3 content of rapeseed oil is some 11 times higher than olive oil.
