Buddlejas and Clematis

As the holder of the national collection of Buddleja and Clematis you’d expect us to know a thing or two about these plant types, and we do!

Being a holder of the National Collections of Buddleja and Clematis Viticella means we are helping to preserve these plants as a living library, referencing and documenting valuable information.

We are very proud of our Collections at Longstock Park Nursery which we have held since 2000. We encourage visitors to come and view the Collections and learn more about the plants and the importance of preserving plant species. You’ll be surprised just how many varieties there are, so we are confident we can help you find the best type of Buddleja or Clematis for your garden space, whatever the size.

Buddleja (butterfly bush)

Buddleja species are generally late summer flowering plants that can be grown easily in most gardens. Buddleja flowers tend to be long and poker-shaped, however there are Buddlejas that bear round, globe-shaped flowers too. The flowers have a honey-like fragrance and are rich in nectar - not surprising then that they often attract large numbers of bees and butterflies at once.

Our collection has over 100 Buddleja species and many of these are available to buy from our nursery.

Visit our Buddleja collection in the walled nursery garden during opening hours. Free to access and open from spring to late autumn, it's a treat for the eyes.

Clematis Viticella

Clematis viticella is an easy to care for plant, being vigorous and free flowing. Originating from a warm southern European climate, it still grows well in cooler conditions and can withstand very low temperatures.

Clematis viticella is a very versatile plant, available in many different varieties of colours and habits. Flowering from mid Summer to late Autumn, it grows freely through trees and across hedges and shrubs without strangling them or causing damage as well as looking stunning on arches and pergolas.

The collection at Longstock Park Nursery has around 30 Clematis Viticella varieties and many of these are available to buy.
