Where It All Began

Waitrose's story goes back over a century. It started in 1904 when Wallace Waite, Arthur Rose, and David Taylor opened a small grocery store in Acton, West London. This was acquired in 1937 by the John Lewis Partnership, a company famous for being owned by its employees. This move helped set the tone for Waitrose’s strong values around ethics, quality, and people. Waitrose has built a reputation for quality, British sourcing and excellent service, distinguishing itself from other supermarkets.

A Labour of Love

We feel very passionate about our countryside and farming community. There are many people across the UK who feel as passionately about this as we do, so we, at Waitrose, have set up the Farming for Nature initiative to bring great minds, experience and skills together to make the change we want a reality.

The team have a powerful vision of how things could be with when we cultivate our land differently. To be able to share our ideas, come together at organised events and explore more ways of improving how we farm, we have created the online Farming for Nature hub. Hear more about it from Andrew Hoad, Programme Lead and Head of Leckford Estate.

Farming for the Future

In 2020 we launched our Farming for Nature commitment to make greenhouse gas emissions from our UK farm suppliers net zero by 2035. Farming for Nature will change farming practices to help address issues of climate change and nature loss, all of which is vital to long term food security. We want to be leaders in this field, making regenerative agriculture a compelling mainstream choice to adopt.

Farming is at the heart of what we do. It allows us to produce delicious food our customers love. It allows us to be custodians of our beautiful landscape, diligently cared for by the Waitrose farmers. But if we don't take care of our countryside, there will soon be nothing left to farm - no agricultural substance. As such, regenerative farming and supporting British farmers is an important focus for us going forwards. Watch the video below to find out more.

Our founder, John Spedan Lewis, was passionate about the environment and the wildlife in it. In 1929 he bought the Leckford Estate and soon after began sustainable farming operations that would have been considered pioneering at the time. Everything that we sell at Waitrose depends on nature so it is important that we act boldly to protect and restore it.
