As we begin to wrap up and prepare for the change in season, lets spare a thought for our gardens who now need to begin bedding down for the long frosty nights they will soon be facing.
Give that lawn some love
Autumn means mowing your lawn for the final time. Raising your blades slightly allows the grass to be a little longer over the winter. Consider spreading some autumn lawn fertiliser, that is high in phosphates and potash, helping strong roots develop, which will in turn produce a healthier looking lawn. Clear up any fallen leaves covering your lawn as these will weaken the grass, making it more likely to become damaged in the cold winter ahead. Remember to clean up your paths or walkways as leaves and other debris can rot and become very slippery. This is also the perfect time to tidy up those lawn edges, getting pristine lines and helping to keep the garden looking smart during the winter.
All wrapped up
Wrap up any delicate plants to protect them from frost and adverse weather. Burlap and twine are ideal for this. Bandage the burlap from the bottom to the top and the twine from top to bottom. Be careful to not wrap or tie too tight as the burlap is to protect, not constrict any branches. Clear any uneaten vegetables as these will rot and encourage pests and diseases. Cut down any annual crawlers by removing dead stems and give the boarders a good spruce.
Finishing touches
With your lawn perfected, boarders tucked up and decks cleared it is time for the finishing touches. Clean out any nest boxes, bird baths and pack away any furniture including garden ornaments. Wrap your outdoor tap and most importantly fill up those bird feeders, they have a long winter ahead.
