Make Your Home Greener this Earth Day

04 Apr 2022

The clocks have gone forward, days are getting a little longer and Spring is in full bloom. April brings the chance to add new life and design into your home as well as celebrating one of our favourite events of the year – Earth Day on the 22nd of April.

What better way to commemorate the occasion than by introducing a plant into your home? A houseplant not only provides a gorgeous green look and a peaceful environment, but they also have the health benefits of air-purifying and act as toxin removers.

Our Top 3 House Plants

If you’re looking at creating your own zen oasis but are feeling nervous, our Longstock Garden Shop has a large array of house plants perfect for beginners right up to intermediate plant parents. Below are three indoor houseplants that are guaranteed to breathe new life into your home:

Bird’s Nest Fern

If you have curious pets or young children at home, the Bird’s Nest Fern is the best plant for you. The tropical houseplant boasts beautiful ruffle-edged leaves that add a splash of green whilst being easily maintained.

Bamboo Palms (Chamaedorea seifrizil)

This air-purifying plant is ideal for those who want to spend more time nurturing their new additions. This sturdy plant is known for its height and requires fertilisation once a month as well as being consistently misted.

Snake Plant

Looking to get a better night’s sleep? The snake plant works best in the bedroom, as it gives off oxygen throughout the night. These plants can remove a variety of harmful toxins from your home such as carbon dioxide.

How to select the Ideal Houseplant

There are a few things you should do in advance of picking and purchasing your new houseplant. Consider the conditions of the space or place in which they will be growing. What kind of light is available? Will they have a proper draining system to avoid excess moisture and drowning roots?

Not only must you consider the plant's requirements, but also how the plant will affect your home. While plants like the English Ivy, Dieffenbachia (also known as dumb cane), Sago Palm, and Peace Lily are great for the air, they can be harmful to animals and humans if eaten or come in contact with the skin.
