Spring into Summer: Outdoor Living and BBQ Inspiration at Leckford Estate

01 Jul 2026

As July settles over the Test Valley, the landscape across our 2,800-acre estate shifts into its most rewarding season. The frantic energy of spring planting has long since passed, replaced by a golden glow as the fields and gardens reach their full glory.

As July settles over the Test Valley, the landscape across our 2,800-acre estate shifts into its most rewarding season. The frantic energy of spring planting has long since passed, replaced by a golden glow as the fields and gardens reach their full glory.

Whether you are seeking the cool, dappled shade of a garden path or gathering friends for a long-overdue feast, these long days invite you to linger a little longer. July is the month to slow down and enjoy everything the estate has to offer at your own pace.

Sizzling Grills and Estate-Grown Flavours

July is prime grilling season, but a great BBQ is about more than a quick bite; it’s a celebration of where food comes from.

At the Longstock Park Farm Shop we are proud to stock premium options from Waitrose’s 'native breeds' beef range. Behind the scenes on our 2,800-acre estate, our own resident Hereford suckler herd plays a vital role in our regenerative farming system. They graze the water meadows and chalk grasslands, living a natural, grass-fed life. This commitment to responsible, Hampshire-based farming benefits the biodiversity of our soil and ensures the highest standards of animal welfare. Our cattle contribute to the wider Waitrose native breed mix alongside other trusted farmers across the UK. These strict ethics and sustainable practices are exactly what we champion.

When you fire up the grill this July, keep it simple:

  • Premium Steaks and Burgers: Sourced through Waitrose's 'native breeds' selection, reflecting exceptional British farming ethics and high animal welfare standards.
  • A drizzle of cold-pressed rapeseed oil : Grown and pressed on the farm, this is a local alternative to olive oil with a high smoke point.
  • Fresh herbs from the nursery: A handful of rosemary or thyme can lift the simplest of marinades.

Cool Down with a Local Favourite

There is perhaps no greater July pleasure than a cold scoop of ice cream on a humid afternoon. This year, we are celebrating National Ice Cream Day on July 19th by championing our local partners.

Although we are a working farm, we also act as a hub for the best independent producers in the region. In the Leckford Café and Farm Shop, you’ll find Jude’s Ice Cream, made just a few miles away in Winchester. As a certified B-Corp with a carbon-negative mission, Jude's perfectly aligns with our own ethos and long-term sustainability goals. There’s a flavour for everyone, and it is the ultimate way to cool down during a family day out in Hampshire.

The Peak of the Water Garden

July is a special time for the Longstock Park Water Garden. Water lilies blanket the surface in pinks, whites and yellows, creating what many call our “Monet moment.” The air is noticeably cooler by the water and the dragonflies provide a constant, shimmering display of movement. It’s a sensory escape that feels miles away from the school holiday rush, offering a moment of peace for visitors of all ages. We recommend bringing a camera to capture the lilies at their most vibrant, usually before the midday sun reaches its peak.

July’s Seasonal Basket

The shelves at the Longstock Park Farm Shop are currently at their most vibrant, filled with seasonal  produce harvested at peak ripeness. There is a world of difference when you enjoy fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables grown with care and picked exactly when they are ready.

  • The Berries: Strawberries and raspberries are at their peak right now. They are best enjoyed simply, perhaps with a splash of local cream or as a topping for a summer pavlova.
  • The Greens: Look out for crisp salad leaves, broad beans and new potatoes. These are the supporting acts that make a summer lunch feel complete.
  • Pantry Essentials: Pair your fresh produce with local cheeses and artisanal chutneys found in-store for a complete Hampshire picnic.

Inspiration for Outdoor Living

The Longstock Park Nursery is full of colour this month. Our 80-metre herbaceous border is in full swing, acting as a living catalogue for what you can achieve in your own garden.

If your outdoor space is missing that final touch for summer entertaining, our Nursery and Garden Shop teams can guide you through our range of premium garden furniture and the iconic Big Green Egg grills. July is about spending more time outside and we have curated everything you need to make your garden feel like a sanctuary.

Your July Visit

July at Leckford Estate is the perfect setting to enjoy the season in whichever way you desire. For some, that may look like a stroll through the blooming lilies at the water garden followed by a relaxed lunch in the café, for others, it’s a wander through the farm shop in order to gather supplies for the evening's grill.

We invite you to slow down, soak in the sun, enjoy the local flavours and make the most of the long, golden days in the heart of the Test Valley.
