Reconnect with nature at Leckford Estate. Enjoy garden adventures, expert gardening advice and a seasonal café menu. Plan your perfect 2026 day out in Hampshire.

The Ultimate Guide to Longstock Park Water Garden

As the morning mist lifts from the River Test and the first delicate shoots of spring begin to pierce the Hampshire soil, we are thrilled to announce that Longstock Park Water Garden is preparing to reopen its gates. From Wednesday 1st April 2026, we welcome back our community, nature enthusiasts and families to experience what has often been called the finest water garden in the world.

Since its creation and development by John Spedan Lewis, this garden has been a testament to considered living, a philosophy that balances human enjoyment with deep respect for the natural world. This year, we are inviting you to do more than just visit; we are inviting you on the perfect family day out to become a part of the estate’s story.

The Water Garden: A Masterpiece in Motion

The beauty of a water garden is how it evolves regularly across each season. Our horticultural team has worked tirelessly to ensure the flora is ready, once again, to put on a spectacular show in 2026.

As you step onto the network of paths, the first thing you will notice is the clarity of the water. Fed by the chalk streams of the River Test, the lakes provide a crystal-clear window into an underwater world. By May, our collection of over 40 varieties of waterlilies will begin their ascent to the surface, eventually blanketing the water in shades of alabaster and deep crimson.

The surrounding banks and borders are a masterclass in texture and form. You will encounter the giant leaves of Gunnera manicata, often called "giant rhubarb," which provide a prehistoric backdrop that children find particularly fascinating. The winding paths take you past displays of primulas and irises and alongside stunning tree varieties, such as the swamp cypress.

Why it’s special: Throughout the six-acre site, you’ll find quiet observation points. These inviting spots are perfectly placed to encourage visitors to sit in peaceful contemplation for five minutes, allowing you to truly appreciate the rich wildlife and the soothing, therapeutic effect of being surrounded by pools of water.

A Family Adventure in Nature’s Classroom

For families, the 2026 season at Longstock Park offers a fantastic opportunity for an 'unplugged' adventure. Our garden provides a rich, sensory experience for your family day out.

  • A Meandering Adventure: The Water Garden’s narrow, elegant bridges offer a delightful adventure for accompanied younger visitors. They encourage a sense of exploration, leading them over the gentle water to ‘secret’ islands and hidden garden paths just waiting to be discovered.
  • Nature's Spectacle: This spring, we invite our guests to become quiet observers of the abundant wildlife. The air is alive with the darting flight of dragonflies and damselflies, while the iridescent flash of a kingfisher is a prized sighting. Keep an eye out for a variety of other bird life and waterfowl enjoying our carefully maintained habitat.

Treats from the Farm Shop

No visit to the Water Garden is complete without a stop at the Leckford Farm Shop, especially with Easter just around the corner.

Our shelves are currently bursting with seasonal delights. We’ve expanded our Hot Cross Bun selection to include Leckford’s own seeded buns, alongside gourmet and traditional varieties.

If you have a sweet tooth, our Easter chocolate collection is more creative than ever. This year, we are featuring:

  • "Flat" Eggs (Shards): A modern, easy-to-snap take on the traditional egg.
  • Pistachio Flavoured Eggs: A nutty, sophisticated twist for the connoisseur.
  • Blonde Chocolate: Creamy, caramelised, and utterly indulgent.

Take the Magic Home

A visit to the Water Garden often leaves guests feeling inspired to get their hands in the soil. That is where the Longstock Park Nursery comes in. This is not your average garden centre; it is a hub for horticultural excellence.

Located just a short drive or walk through the grounds of Longstock Park from the Water Garden, the plant nursery is home to the National Collection of Buddleia.

Many of the water garden plants can be purchased from our garden shop for your own small piece of the water garden at home, as they thrive in the damp, riverside conditions of our local area.

This year, we are focusing heavily on "future-proofing" your own green spaces. As our climate shifts, we are highlighting drought-tolerant plants that offer maximum impact with minimum water usage. Keep an eye out for our stunning displays of Lavender and Sedum, which provide vibrant colour and texture even in the driest spells.

To help you recreate this at home sustainably, our nursery now exclusively promotes peat-free compost and low-maintenance landscaping solutions, such as decorative gravel, which helps retain soil moisture while looking sleek and modern.

Our nursery team are experts in their field. Whether you have a tricky corner to fill in your garden or want to attract more bees and butterflies, our team can provide advice on plant selection for your type of garden. By visiting the nursery, you will be supporting our commitment to regenerative practices and ensuring your own garden is helping to support and enhance the local ecosystem.

Growing Your Own (Even in Small Spaces)

You don’t need a vast estate to enjoy the "grow your own" lifestyle. This season, we are showcasing vegetables perfect for small spaces and containers. Look out for our dwarf chillies and compact aubergines, which are as ornamental as they are delicious.

As our local bees and butterflies wake up this April, they face a landscape where nectar can be hard to find. You can help bridge that gap. We’ve stocked our nursery with a vibrant selection of early-season pollinator plants, including hardy Primroses and Nemesia, specifically chosen to provide an immediate food source.

We invite you to visit us at Longstock Park Nursery to pick up these spring essentials. By adding even a few to your pots or borders, you aren't just decorating your garden, you're becoming a vital part of our local biodiversity rescue team.

Bringing the Outside In

As the weather begins to turn, we’re exploring the concept of 'Moveable' Houseplants. These are versatile varieties like Spider Plants and Tradescantia that thrive indoors during the breeze of spring but can transition to your patio or balcony as the weather warms up in the summer months.

Exceptional Dining at The Longstock Park Café

All that fresh air is bound to work up an appetite. Longstock Park Café is the heart of the estate’s social life. We believe that what you eat should be as carefully considered as the garden you’ve just walked through.

Our seasonal menu is a celebration of the Leckford Estate and fresh ingredients. As the Waitrose Farm, we have access to some of the finest ingredients grown right here on our farm.

The Estate Breakfast: Start your day with a tasty selection of breakfast favourites.

  • Seasonal Lunches: Our chefs create dishes that reflect the season, from vibrant salads to hearty soups.
  • Handmade Cakes: No visit is complete without a slice of cake and a pot of tea, enjoyed on our terrace overlooking the plant nursery.

The café is a place to pause and reflect on the tranquil beauty you have experienced.

The Annual Pass is Your Passport to Peace

If you are reading this and thinking, I want to see the lilies in June, but I also want to see the autumn colours in October, then the Water Garden Season Ticket is designed for you.

In 2026, we are making the Season Ticket the cornerstone of our community. Single-day tickets are wonderful for a one-off trip, but the garden is a living landscape that changes every single week.

The Benefits of the Water Garden Season Ticket:

  1. Unlimited Access: Visit as many times as you like during the opening season (April to October). This allows you to witness the full lifecycle of the garden, from the first spring bulbs to the dramatic seed heads of late summer.
  2. Financial Savvy: An individual pass is £40 and a joint pass is £75. If you visit more than four times, the pass has already paid for itself.
  3. The 10% Discount: This is the big one. Season Ticket holders receive 10% off at both the Longstock Park Nursery and the Farm Shop. For the keen gardener, this means significant savings on our plants and premium estate produce.
  4. A Place for Every Mood: Whether you need a brisk walk to clear your head or a quiet place for the children to sketch the flowers, the garden is yours all season long.

While the garden is beautiful throughout the season (April–October), the best time to visit for the iconic waterlily display is during June, July and August. If you prefer the vibrant colours of azaleas and rhododendrons, we recommend visiting in late April or May. To see the garden's full transformation, many visitors invest in a Season Ticket.

Are dogs allowed at Longstock Park Water Garden?

To protect our delicate wildlife and maintain flora, only assistance dogs are permitted inside the Water Garden and the grounds of Longstock Park. However, well-behaved dogs on leads are very welcome in the outdoor seating areas of the Longstock Park Café and within the Nursery grounds.

Is the Water Garden accessible for wheelchairs and prams?

Much of the Water Garden is accessible via flat, gravelled paths; however, due to the historic nature of the site, some islands are only accessible via narrow bridges which may not be suitable for wider wheelchairs or double prams. Accessible toilet facilities are available at the garden and on-site at the Farm Shop and Café.
