January represents a clean slate. After the Christmas rush, a quiet day in nature is often the reset we need. Leckford Estate in the Test Valley is made for it: calm winter walks, seasonal food, a well-stocked farm shop and expert help at the nursery when you are ready to plan the garden year. Here is how to make a simple, uplifting day of it and set the tone for your best year yet.

Breathe Out on A Winter Walk
Longstock Park Water Garden opens for Winter Walks on selected dates through February. It’s a gentle, self-guided route across Longstock Park and into the much-loved water garden, where mirror-still pools, islands and bridges feel especially peaceful in winter light. Tickets include a complimentary hot drink at Longstock Park Café afterwards, which hits the spot on a frosty morning.
Booking & Logistics
- Advanced booking is essential.
- Meeting Point: Longstock Park Farm Shop.
- Time: Meet between 11:00 AM and 11:30 AM for a short route briefing before setting off at your leisure.
- Closing Time: Please note that the Water Gardens close at 2:00 PM.
Good to know before you go:
- The route includes grassy slopes, which can be slippery when wet. Wear sturdy footwear and dress for the elements, and note that this part of the route is not suitable for mobility scooters or wheelchairs.
- Wheelchair access is possible to most areas of the water garden, though paths are uneven in places.
- Assistance dogs are welcome; otherwise, dogs are not permitted on the walk. Parking and toilets are available by the Farm Shop & Café and at the garden entrance.

Warm Up at Longstock Park Café
After your walk, take a seat at Longstock Park Café for lunch or a slice of something homemade as a light snack. The menu champions seasonal ingredients from the estate and trusted local suppliers, with flour milled from wheat grown on the Waitrose & Partners farm at Leckford often appearing in the bakes. There is no need to book.
If the winter sun shows its face, the terrace is a calm sun-catching spot to linger with a hot drink. Indoors, the café is light and relaxed, ideal for families or a catch-up with friends. But do note, only assistance dogs are allowed indoors, with dogs on leads welcome in outdoor eating areas.
