We are a mixed farm with the majority of our produce being supplied to Waitrose.
Our Holstein/Friesian dairy herd produces around 12,000 litres of milk per day which goes into Waitrose Essential milk. As a Waitrose dairy farmer, we are committed to ensuring that all our livestock grazes for at least 120 days a year. We rear all our dairy cows from calves born on the estate.
We have around 100 head of Aberdeen Angus beef cattle. They spend the majority of their time out at grass as part of our conservation management plan for our water meadows and chalk down lands. Over the winter months, we bring around 1000 head of sheep onto the estate where they over winter on our grass leys and stubble turnips.
We grow around 1,500 acres of cereal crops. Our main crop is wheat but we grow barley, oats and oilseed rape as part of our rotation. Additionally, we grow a small area of flax for use in John Lewis mattresses.
All our livestock forage requirements are grown on the estate and we have around 625 acres of maize, Lucerne, faba beans and rotational grass leys.
Our fruit business is around 30 acres of apples and pears. We grow a number of varieties which are sold in Waitrose as dessert fruit. Additionally, we produce juice and cider for sale in Waitrose and our farm shop.
Our newest enterprise is our vineyards. First planted in 2009 we increase our vine area to 18 acres in Spring 2017. We produce Leckford Sparkling Brut which is blended from the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Mernier grapes we grow.
The entire estate is under conservation management. We have over 100 acres of land designated for conservation purposes alongside 400 acres of woodland.
We are a member of LEAF and one of 38 LEAF demonstration farms in the UK. We adopt sustainable farming practices and our ultimate goal is to ensure that we are responsible land owners and that we leave our soils and environment in great shape for future generations to farm.
